What is a Micron?

In the context of wool, a micron is a unit of measurement used to quantify the diameter of individual wool fibers. Specifically, it represents the average diameter of the fibers within a wool sample. The term "micron" is short for micrometer, which is equal to one millionth of a meter.

Wool fibers can vary in diameter, and the micron measurement is an essential factor in determining the quality and characteristics of the wool. Generally, the finer the wool fibers (smaller microns), the softer and more luxurious the wool feels. Conversely, coarser wool fibers (larger microns) may feel sturdier but might be less suitable for applications where softness is a key attribute.

For example, fine Merino wool, often used in high-end garments, can have microns in the range of 18 to 24 micrometers. Coarser wools, like those from some crossbred sheep, may have microns exceeding 30. The micron measurement is an important consideration for manufacturers, artisans, and consumers when choosing wool for various applications, as it directly influences the texture, comfort, and performance of the end product.
